16 Dec 2025 Things to do in Birch Bay
The beach at Birch Bay is unlike many others on the West Coast, primarily because of its unique tidal flats. When the tide goes out, the water remains shallow and warms up quickly, making it arguably the warmest swimmable saltwater north of California during the summer months.
Beachcombing: The vast, exposed sand flats at low tide are a treasure trove. It's a prime spot for finding unique shells, small crabs, and abundant sand dollars. This is a quiet, educational activity that kids love.
Crabbing and Clamming: With the proper licenses (required, so check the latest WA Fish & Wildlife regulations!), you can enjoy crabbing or digging for clams.
Shallow Swimming: At mid-to-high tide, the warm water is ideal for wading and swimming, often feeling more like a lake than the frigid Pacific Ocean.
